Sustainability

IMG 7554

Ski New Hampshire is a trade association whose 30+ ski area members agree that a clean and healthy environment is an intrinsic and important element of the natural ecosystems in which our ski areas operate and that it is our job to be stewards of the environments in which we make our livelihoods and which we call home.

On this page, you can scroll down to learn more about what some of our members are doing to champion sustainability and lower their carbon footprints. We’ve also shared some ideas for how our guests can be part of the solution to protect our environment and ensure that winter and the ski and snowboard lifestyle can be enjoyed by generations to come. Finally, we've included notes on a few things Ski NH is doing as an association to support climate action.

How can our guests be more sustainable at ski areas? Here are some ideas:

  • Carpool to the slopes with friends when you can, and avoid idling your gas vehicles when you’re in the drop-off areas or parking lots. Many ski areas have “no idle” zones. Consider this anywhere you might be idling your vehicle, not just at your favorite ski area.

  • Are you an EV driver? Cranmore Mountain Resort, Gunstock Mountain Resort, Loon Mountain Resort, and Great Glen Trails have EV charging stations; expect to see more soon (and we’ll be sharing updates as we have them).

  • Where available, be sure to recycle, and try to waste less in general. If packing your lunch, bring food and drinks in reusable boxes and bottles to avoid single-use plastics.

  • When possible, take advantage of the Inflation Reduction Act rebates and tax credits to lower your carbon footprint through home efficiency projects, clean energy installations, and electric vehicle purchases. Additional rebates and incentives may be available from your state, municipality, or utility.

  • Contact your local, state, and federal legislators and share your support for policies that will cut greenhouse gas emissions and champion sustainability.

Ski NH is playing its part through a combination of advocacy and education. Here are some highlights of our recent efforts:

  • Have shared our support of the Inflation Reduction Act and continued need for climate action with NH Senators Shaheen and Hassan and NH Representatives Kuster and Pappas.

  • Actively advocating for policies in NH that will support the expansion of EV charging infrastructure; participate in Drive Electric NH policy and infrastructure committees.

  • Advocated for the passage of NH House Bill 549 to ensure future funding of energy efficiency programs in the state.

  • Since 2019 Ski NH has been an Organizing Partner of NH Energy Week, which seeks to educate participants about the many aspects of clean energy adoption. The 2024 NH Energy Week will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual events and will take place May 6-10 - there will be additional opportunities for you to learn about our energy future.

  • Regularly work to educate ski area and industry members about opportunities, issues, and research in the sustainability/climate change/clean energy space.

Gunstock Mountain Resort EV Charging & Other Conservation Initiatives

As part of Gunstock's recent capital expense improvements, parking lot upgrades included the installation of five level 2 ChargePoint chargers for a total of 10 charging spots (EV Plug J1772). Chargers are open 24/7 and have tap-to-pay capability for credit card use. The fee being charged is $.25 per kWh.

Gunstock is also proud to work with local organizations such as Belknap County Conservation District. The BCCD works with farmers, forest owners, landowners, schools, and municipalities to promote the use, protection, and conservation of natural resources on both private and public land, rural and urban. They work in collaboration with other environmental organizations and private sector professionals, do on-the-groundwork to improve and maintain Belknap County's environment through projects such as stream bed restoration, invasive species management, and pollinator plantings. They educate members of the community through workshops, events and installations such as interpretive trail signs to help inform people about the importance of natural resources. Conservation programs are carried out through education and the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs). Technical assistance and information for the implementation of BMPs are provided for various land uses in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
